The Bajan Gems gave their 2027 Netball World Cup qualification hopes a significant boost on Tuesday evening, defeating the Trinidad and Tobago Calypso Girls 49–44 in a tightly contested series decider at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium in Bridgetown. The result sealed a 2–1 series victory for Barbados and delivered valuable ranking points in the race for World Cup qualification.
After splitting the opening two matches, both teams entered the decider with everything to play for. It was the Gems who started the brighter, racing to a 14–9 lead at the end of the first quarter behind the sharp shooting of goal shooter Rhe-Ann Niles, who finished the match with 29 goals from 34 attempts. Niles was ably supported by goal attack Azaria Alleyne, the exciting young talent who was promoted to the senior squad from the Under-21 programme and has quickly established herself as a key member of the attacking unit.
Trinidad and Tobago, ranked 11th in the world, fought their way back into the contest in the second quarter, tightening their defensive structure and forcing Barbados into a series of uncharacteristic errors through the mid-court. The Calypso Girls closed the gap to just two goals at half-time, setting up a tense second half.
The third quarter proved to be the decisive passage of play. Wing defence Latonia Blackman, the experienced co-captain, produced a masterful display of defensive pressure, repeatedly disrupting Trinidad and Tobago's centre passes and creating turnover opportunities that the Gems converted with ruthless efficiency. Barbados outscored the visitors 14–10 in the period to establish a six-goal buffer heading into the final quarter.
Trinidad and Tobago made one final push in the closing stages, pulling within four goals with three minutes remaining, but goal keeper Shonette Azore-Bruce produced two crucial intercepts to slam the door shut. The victory sparked jubilant scenes among the home supporters, many of whom had packed the gymnasium to provide vocal backing for the Gems throughout the series.
"This series win means the world to us," said Blackman after the match. "We know we have to keep improving if we want to qualify for the World Cup, but beating a team of Trinidad and Tobago's quality shows that we are heading in the right direction. The younger players have brought so much energy and belief to this group."
