The Australian Diamonds sent an emphatic message to their World Cup rivals with a commanding 67–51 victory over Jamaica's Sunshine Girls in the opening match of their two-test series at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on Saturday night. Playing in front of a passionate capacity crowd, the world number one side produced a performance of precision and power that underscored their status as favourites for the 2027 Netball World Cup on home soil.

Goal attack Sophie Dwyer was the star of the show, delivering one of the finest individual performances seen in a Diamonds dress this season. The Giants Netball sharpshooter finished with 32 goals from 35 attempts at an extraordinary 91 per cent conversion rate, combining sublime movement in the circle with pinpoint accuracy under the post. Her combination with goal shooter Cara Koenen, who contributed 30 goals of her own, gave Jamaica's experienced defence a torrid evening.

Captain Liz Watson controlled proceedings from centre, setting the tempo with her trademark quick ball movement and precise feeds into the shooting circle. Watson, who is preparing for what will be her third Netball World Cup campaign, was instrumental in Australia's blistering first-half performance, during which the Diamonds established a 35–24 advantage. Her court vision and decision-making were complemented by the tireless work of wing attack Sunday Aryang, who covered every blade of the court.

Jamaica, ranked fourth in the world, were competitive in patches but struggled to contain Australia's movement through the mid-court. The Sunshine Girls found themselves chasing the game from early in the second quarter and were unable to generate the turnover ball they needed to mount a sustained comeback. Australia's defensive unit, anchored by the imposing Courtney Bruce at goal keeper and the ever-reliable Joanna Weston at goal defence, restricted Jamaica to just 51 goals — well below their average output.

"It's a really pleasing performance, particularly the way we executed under pressure," said Diamonds head coach Stacey Marinkovich. "We've been building towards these types of performances and to deliver it against a team of Jamaica's calibre in front of our home fans is very satisfying. But we know they'll come back harder in the second test, so we can't afford to take our foot off the pedal."

The victory will only heighten anticipation for the 2027 Netball World Cup, which Australia will host in Sydney. With a squad brimming with experience and emerging talent — including seven players under the age of 25 — the Diamonds are shaping as formidable contenders to add another World Cup title to their record haul of twelve. The second test takes place in Melbourne next Wednesday.
